SUMMER 2022 APPLICATION
The Ida B. Wells Just Data Lab brings together students, educators, activists, and artists to develop a critical and creative approach to data conception, production, and circulation. This summer research associates will build upon the tradition of 1960s Freedom Schools developed by the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) that sought to liberate people from oppressive social systems using the tools of popular education. After learning about this tradition (Week 1), RAs will begin a four-week Research Track, exploring data justice issues in a specific social context (such as housing, education, immigration, healthcare, policing, work, arts & media etc), followed by a four-week Communications Track in which RAs will develop the skills to synthesize what they have learned into engaging and interactive workshops, presentations, and activities. During the final week, RAs will present at the Inaugural Civics of Technology conference, August 4-5th, 11am - 3pm EST.
Rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors from any department are welcome to apply. Applicants should have an interest in the social dimensions of technology and should have taken at least one course focused on race, racism, and inequality. RAs must:
- Be available every Tuesday from 5:00 - 6:30pm ET for a lab meeting.
- Be available every Friday for a 1.5 hour team meeting at a recurring time tbd.
- Be able and willing to work 17 asynchronous hours per week
- Be available to participate in the Civics of Technology conference Aug 4–5the, 11am to 3pm EST.
