Wednesday afternoons, 4:30-6:00pm. Stanhope Seminar Room

Faculty Convener: Melissa Harris-Lacewell

The theme for 2007-2008 is African American Identity, History and the State.   Drawing on research from diverse fields of study, this year’s seminar explores the intersection of black self-definitions, cultural productions, resistance and accommodation with the policies and practices of the American state.   The seminar is interested in exploring how these intersections have changed across time and in mapping their contemporary formations.   The research presented in the workshop will assist participants in drawing connections across multiple areas of racialized state/citizen interaction, including: local economies, criminal justice, social policy, international conflict, religious practice and artistic expression.
