Ruth Simmons

Dr. Simmons, who came to Princeton in 1983 as Director of Studies at Butler College, held a number of faculty and administrative appointments at the university, becoming Vice Provost in 1992.  She authored the 1993 Princeton Report on Campus Race Relations, and served as Provost at Spelman before being named president of Smith College in 1995.  She was the first African American to lead an Ivy League institution when she became president of Brown University in 2001.

Dr. Simmons is also on the advisory board of the Department of African American Studies.
